Shark control gear fines issued

Fisheries Queensland has issued two $1,100 on-the-spot fines for interference with shark control equipment following an investigation into the removal of two drumline hooks at Currimundi on the Sunshine Coast last month.

Queensland Shark Control Program Manager Jeff Krause said information received from a member of the public lead to a property inspection at Landsborough last week and resulted in fines for interfering with the equipment.

“Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol officers acted in response to anonymous information surrounding the removal of shark control program equipment at Currimundi last month,” Mr Krause said.

“Although the inspection of the property did not lead to recovery of any shark control equipment, the information from the public has led to both occupants at the property receiving $1,100 on-the-spot fines for interfering with the equipment.

“We would like to thank the member of the public for their information, and we are calling for further information into those responsible for the removal of a further 16 hooks from Yaroomba.

“This matter highlights the seriousness of such actions and the potential danger people face for not having a protected beach.

“The offenders apologised for removing the hooks and said they hadn’t thought about the repercussions of removing them.”

Mr Krause said that anyone with information on the interference should call the Fishwatch Hotline on 1800 017 116.

“We rely on the support of the community to provide information relating to these offences and urged people to report any information to the Fishwatch Hotline on 1800 017 116.

“Any interference with the fishing equipment could result in an on-the-spot fine of $1,100 up to a maximum fine of $55,000.”
