Location: Taitung County, Taiwan.
Species: Great white shark ( Carcharodon carcharias ).
Size: said to be 4,5 metres in length, 1.600 kg in weight (other source: over 900 kg).
According to Taiwanese media reports, fishermen have caught another great white shark off the island’s east coast. The specimen marks the third capture of an adult white shark in Taiwan since late October.
The latest (third) specimen got caught accidentally in a fishing net about 4 km off the coast of Changbin Township early this morning (Nov 14th ). But according to another source, the capture occurred only 300 metres from the coastline.
It is reported that the white shark was a pregnant female, carrying six pups. The shark was sold for NT$185,000 (US$6,374.5) at a local fish market.
Chuang Shou-cheng (an associate professor of the Department of Environmental Biology and Fisheries Science at National Taiwan Ocean University) said to the local media that the presence of a great white shark in the waters off Taiwan is an indication that the marine ecology in the area has improved. He also said that Taiwan’s white shark population has dropped in the last few decades as a result of marine pollution.
