Date: 15. December 2011.

Location: Quemchi, Chiloé Island, Los Lagos Region, Chile.

Species: Basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus).

Size: 723 cm in length.

The specimen was caught in the fishing net of the vessel ‘Capricornio’.

The fisherman Sergio Guerquen towed the dead shark to the shores of Caucahué, a small island located opposite Quemchi. He reported his unusual catch to the Navy and officials of the Bureau of Fisheries came to examine the basking shark.

Only a month ago, another basking shark was presumably killed by fishing gear off the Chilean coast ( see here ).
