Shark “Chumming” Activities Restricted to Night Hours ONLY,
Permitted from 8pm – 8 am ONLY,
Prohibited from 8 am – 8 pm

In response to recent shark incidents in Carteret County and the large number of visitors to Emerald Isle’s beach strand each day, the Town of Emerald Isle has temporarily restricted shark “chumming” activities on the beach and nearshore areas.

Shark “chumming” activities are now permitted during night hours ONLY, from 8 pm – 8 am each night. These activities are prohibited during daytime hours, from 8 am – 8 pm each day. This restriction is effective immediately, and will continue through September 15. This restriction applies to the Town’s entire beach strand along the Atlantic Ocean and Bogue Inlet.

Any shark “chumming” activities between 8 am – 8 pm are now illegal, and the Emerald Isle Police Department will be enforcing this restriction. Violators will be required to immediately cease shark “chumming” activities, and may be subject to a civil penalty.

This temporary restriction applies to shark “chumming” only, and no other fishing activities are restricted in Emerald Isle. Enjoy the fishing, and please be courteous to others enjoying the beach!
