CERTIFICATION BODY: BUREAU VERITAS CERTIFICATION
BUREAU VERITAS Certification is pleased to announce that the above fishery is ready for starting the
full assessment under the requirements of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Sustainable Fisheries
certification. The assessment will evaluate this fishery for compliance with the international Standard for
well-managed and sustainable fisheries produced by the MSC.
The independent Certification Body contracted to undertake this assessment is BUREAU VERITAS
Certification.
The Client Group being assessed therefore covered by the certificate is the producers’ organization
Organización de Palangreros Guardeses (ORPAGU) and the fishing Spanish Confederation,
Confederación Española de Pesca (CEPESCA) including their 34 longline vessels targeting both species
swordfish and blue shark as target species.
The candidate swordfish & blue shark fisheries are managed at the international level by the International
Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), with management measures implemented
on a national level.
Initially, BUREAU VERITAS Certification seeks to open a dialogue with all organizations or individuals
with a direct interest in this fishery. Anyone wishing to provide comments or information to the
assessment process (in terms of the status of the stock, ecosystem interactions or fishery management
practices) is invited to contact BUREAU VERITAS Certification. All inquiries about the certification
process and participation as a stakeholder may be sent to BUREAU VERITAS Certification.
The MSC provides a set of guidelines and templates to assist in the transfer of information between
stakeholders and Certification Bodies. These should be used for any comments you wish to make on this
