Scientists are reviewing a raft of information about hammerhead sharks to provide a basis for better understanding and protecting these unique and susceptible species.

Information on the status of Australian hammerhead shark populations is needed to support Australian and international conservation and management initiatives. To define the present state of knowledge, a study led by the Australian Institute of Marine Science is collating and synthesising data on their biology, ecology and interactions with fisheries. The information will support conceptual models of shark population structure (the numbers of sharks at various ages in different locations) to refine the status of Australian hammerhead shark populations, and will assist in the prioritisation of future research.
