Fish quarantine officers (at the Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Jakarta) foiled an attempt to smuggle 600 kg of dried shark fins to Hong Kong. The value of the haul is estimated to be around 72,000 USD on the Indonesian market.

According to local officials, the fins came from around 3,000 oceanic whitetip sharks which were caught in the waters around Java island.

The oceanic whitetip shark (Carcharhinus longimanus) is protected in Indonesia and banned from export.  In March 2013, this shark species was also listed in CITES Appendix II at the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties (CoP16) in Bangkok.
