On 21. June 2015, a commercial trawler caught this basking shark ( Cetorhinus maximus ) off the west coast of Victoria, located in the south-east of Australia. The male basker was unfortunately dead by the time it was pulled aboard.

The Museum Victroria has sent a small team to Portland to measure, describe and take samples from the shark which they will use to gain rare insights into this little-known species.

The only specimens of a basking shark that Museum Victoria currently holds date back to the 19th century.
