In the morning of the same day, a large whale shark (Rhincodon typus) stranded on a beach in Santa Marianita which is located near Manta in Ecuador’s Manabí Province. The city of Manta is regarded as the commercial shark fishing capital in Ecuador.

The female whale shark measured about 9 metres in length with an estimated weight of over 10 tons.

More than 100 volunteers, including members of the National Police, fishermen, surfers and even a local councilor, immediately launched a rescue attempt and tried to pull the shark back into deeper water. Unfortunately, they failed in their efforts and the animal reportedly died around 4 pm in the afternoon. ( Sources: El Telegrafo and El Universo ).
