Whale shark capital Donsol to have better road access by 2016

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is currently working on two tourism road projects that will further boost the tourism potential of Donsol Sorsogon, the “Whale Shark Capital of the world”.

DPWH Secretary Rogelio L. Singson said the implementation of tourism road projects heading to Donsol, which has a combined cost of P1.4 billion is expected to be finished in the year 2016.

The road project is part of the DPWH convergence program with the Department of Tourism (DOT) under the DOT Tourism Master Plan to provide access to designated tourism destination.

In progress since 2012 is the upgrading of P769.2 million Pioduran-Donsol-Sta. Cruz Road, which involves the improvement of 26.5 kilometers road starting from Barangay Brororan, Donsol, province of Sorsogon to junction of Ligao-Pioduran Road at the Poblacion of Pioduran, Albay; and construction of 2 bridges with a total length of 59.10 lineal meters.

The other on-going project which commenced in 2013 is the P700 million road improvement of 24.9-kilometer Guinobatan-Jovelar-Donsol Road.

Singson said these two (2) road projects were designed having 6.7 meters pavement width and thickness of 230 milimeters of concrete.

When completed, the Pioduran-Donsol-Sta. Cruz Road and Guinobatan-Jovelar-Donsol Road would facilitate growth to the already booming tourism of Sorsogon, enabling tourists to travel with ease.

Aside from the whale shark sanctuary in Donsol, the province of Sorsogon also attracts tourists with its pristine beaches, unexplored caves, waterfalls and natural parks.
