Shark capture order rescinded

Following a significant reduction in the rate of detections of the high hazard shark within Warnbro Sound, Department of Fisheries Acting Director General, Dr Rick Fletcher has rescinded the catch order.

This action is consistent with the State Government’s guidelines for the take of sharks posing a serious threat to public safety.

This high risk shark had been frequenting the Warnbro Sound area irregularly since late November. An increase in the level of detections during daylight hours on consecutive days last week prompted the additional capture response to be undertaken.  With the frequency of daytime detections having reduced over the past few days, the risk level has today been reviewed.

Warnbro Beach will be reopened this afternoon.  However water users should continue to take precautions when using beaches.  Advice is that water users should:

  • Adhere to any beach closures which may be in place.
  • Keep informed of the latest detection and sighting information by checking the Surf Life Saving Twitter – www.twitter.com/SLSWA or the SharkSmart activity map www.sharksmart.com.au/shark-activity
  • Report any shark sightings to Water Police on 9442 8600.
