Sandbar sharks with severe injuries caused by commercial gill-nets

A short video and three still photos that show injuries sustained by sandbar sharks that became entangled in commercial fishing nets – three gill net injuries and one from a trawl net. The alarming thing to contemplate is that these are only the injured sharks that we happened to catch. One can only imagine how many more are entangled in such nets and don’t survive the ordeal. All of these sharks were caught off the coast of Maryland over the last three years with the most recent being the one in the video which we encountered on September 21, 2013 – Mark Sampson
