Melbourne, Fl – Shark Bite

Surfer bitten by shark near Melbourne Beach

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A Brevard County surfer suffered a shark bite Sunday morning. The man, whose name has not been released, was chomped on the arm by the shark between 9:30 and 10 a.m. Sunday.

Ocean Rescue Shift Supervisor Derek Swor told WESH 2 News the shark bite occurred about 5 miles south of Ocean Avenue, which would be near the Archie Carr Wildlife Refuge near Melbourne Beach. Swor said the man went to a nearby fire station, where he was treated by paramedics. He did not require transportation to a hospital.

Swor noted there were lots of bait fish in the water along Brevard’s shoreline today, which likely attracted small sharks to the shallow water. The county has purple flags flying on beaches in South Brevard because of the possibility of sharks.

Brevard beaches have rip current conditions this weekend, and lifeguards rescued a handful of people from the rip currents Sunday. Swor said to expect rip conditions on Monday also.
