Description of the contract
Run by Cefas, Shark By-watch UK is a forward-thinking shark and ray project, engaging directly with the under 10 metre fishing fleet along the East Anglian coast. The project is funded by the European Fisheries Fund (EFF), which is committed to promoting the long-term future of England’s fishing industry, by helping fishermen to become more sustainable and remain profitable. By supporting fishermen and scientists working together, the project aims to: – a) increase awareness of shark and ray abundance and by-catch in the inshore fisheries of the southern North Sea (ICES division IVc). b) improve fishing and handling practices, whilst collecting data and information, to help support a more sustainable, long-term shark and ray fishery. c) demonstrate local stock status and better inform policy decisions. The aims of the project will be achieved, in part, by establishing fishery-dependent surveys, for which you are invited to tender. These surveys will be lead by fishermen, promoting greater industry involvement in future shark and ray assessments and to help determine ways to conserve local stocks.
