37. Mr V M Manzini (DA-Mpumalanga) to ask the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs:

(1) Whether she has been informed that long line shark fishing has been taking
place off the coast of St Francis Bay since the beginning of 2012; if not,
what is the position in this regard; if so, when will she launch an
investigation into the matter;

(2) whether, considering that this type of fishing does not discriminate between
species of sharks caught, she has any concerns regarding the threats to
health of populations of certain shark species; if not, how was this
conclusion reached; if so, what are the relevant details;

(3) whether she will investigate whether the close vicinity to the shore of this
shark fishing in St Francis Bay poses a risk to bathers; if not, why not; if so,
what are the relevant details;

(4) whether her department has provided any input on the protection of shark
populations to the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries; if not,
why not; if so, what are the relevant details?                                      CW39E
