Rare shark found dead in Azores

Date: 08. February 2012.

Location: Ribeira Grande, São Miguel Island, Azores.

Species: Smalltooth sandtiger shark (Odontaspis ferox).

Size: 320 cm in length.

The dead specimen (male) was found beached at Praia dos Poços in the
municipality of Ribeira Grande, which is located in the northern part of the
island of São Miguel.

The exact cause of death is unknown, the animal showed no external injuries.

Local authorities decided to bury the carcass after biologists had taken tissue
samples and the jaws of the shark.
