Preliminary results of standardized CPUE for porbeagle in the South Atlantic

Preliminary results of standardized CPUE for porbeagle in the South Atlantic from Japanese longline logbook data between 1994 and 2010.

SUMMARY:

CPUE (catch per unit effort) for porbeagle caught by the Japanese longline fishery in the South Atlantic was standardized using filtered logbook data from 1994 to 2010. There was spatio-temporal bias in the catch of porbeagle and no catch was reported in 1996, 1997, 1999, 2002 and 2004 and these years were excluded from the analysis. The CPUE of recent five years (2005-2009) did not show a decreasing trend. As the distribution of this species is continuous in the southern ocean, the analysis using the data from South Atlantic and the South Indian Oceans may be appropriate.
