Landing of Sharks and Rays

In December 2011, the estimated landings of sharks and rays decreased significantly by ca. 79 percent in comparison to the previous month.

The vast majority of the landings (78,4%) were reported from the ports of Manta and Esmeraldas. But almost the entire catches of rays were landed in Puerto Bolivar.

Pelagic thresher sharks and blue sharks represented almost two-thirds of all elasmobranch catches in the last month of 2011.

ECUADOR – Total estimated landings (t) by species – December 2011 :

SHARKS:

Pelagic thresher shark (Alopias pelagicus) = 63,28 t (39,86 %).

Blue shark (Prionace glauca) = 39,14 t (24,65 %).

Silky shark (Carcharhinus falciformis) = 18,89 t (11,9%).

Shortfin mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus) = 14,58 t (9,19 %)

Smooth hammerhead (Sphyrna zygaena) = 8,59 t (5,41 %).

Scalloped hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini) = 0,72 t (0,45%).

Hammerhead shark (Sphyrna spp.) = 0,44 t (0,28 %).

Tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) = 0,12 t (0,08 %).

RAYS:

Longtail stingray (Dasyatis longa) = 8,82 t (5,56 %).

Munk’s Devil Ray (Mobula munkiana) = 1,78 t (1,12 %).

California Butterfly Ray (Gymnura marmorata) = 0,93 t (0,59 %).

Sharpnose stingray (Dasyatis acutirostra) = 0,81 t (0,51 %).

Giant electric ray (Narcine entemedor) = 0,26 t (0,16 %).

Pacific Cownose Rays (Rhinoptera steindachneri) = 0,2 t (0,13 %).

Flathead guitarfish (Rhinobatos planiceps) = 0,17 t (0,11 %).

TOTAL = 158,73 tons (100 %).
