Angler lands big mako shark in Louisiana

Date: 17. February 2012.

Location: Louisiana, USA.

Species: Shortfin mako shark ( Isurus oxyrinchus ).

Size: 625 pounds in weight.

The mako was caught in the waters off the Louisiana coast by the charter boat ‘Red Eye’ that is docked at Venice Marina. Venice is located approx. 130 km south of New Orleans on the west bank of the Mississippi River.

Two turtles, a whole small shark ( Carcharhinus obscurus ? ), and the caudal section of another shark were found among the stomach contents of this specimen (see photo below).
