8th shark bite reported in Volusia County

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Volusia County lived up to its nickname of “shark bite capitol of the world” Thursday.

A 24-year-old surfer from Holmes Beach was bit by a shark on the ankle just after 10:30 a.m.

The incident happened in the ocean off Ponce Inlet, just north of the jetty. Most bites occur on the south side in New Smyrna Beach.

The injury is minor, though the victim may need a few stitches.

He was not transported but will deal with it himself, according to officials.

It’s the eighth shark bite in Volusia County in 2012.
