Tiger Shark encounter in Hawaii July 24, 2011

24 July 2011 –

Mike Uyehara (49) and his son Eric (15) came face to face with a tiger shark while spearfishing about 20 yards off-shore near Hapuna Beach at about 6:15 am.

According to Mr. Uyehara, the estimated eight- to 10-foot tiger shark made three passes at them before losing interest.

The shark sighting lead to the closure of Hapuna Beach (News Release). The fire department conducted an aerial search, and confirmed the presence of three sharks in that area.
