The authorities are investigating an apparent shark attack in Puerto Rico.

The incident occurred on September 30 at about 9.50 am in Hatillo,

on the island’s north coast.

Rafael Colón Casanova (aged 27) was bitten on his right leg while surfing with a friend.

But the surfer did not see what bit him, he just felt something tugging on his leg for a few seconds.

The injuries, between the knee and ankle, required over 80 stitches.

According to the local biologist Edwin Omar Rodríguez, the wounds could have been caused either

by a small shark or a barracuda.
