Shark Fishing Vessel captured in Galapagos

The Galapagos National Park’s website is reporting that at least 357 sharks were found in the hold of the fishing vessel ‘ FER MARY I ‘, which was operating illegally in the Marine Reserve of the Galapagos Islands.

On 18th July, the boat was intercepted southeast of Genovesa Island, 20 miles inside the Marine Reserve.

Naval authorities and staff of the Galapagos National Park Service conducted an inspection and seized 357 sharks :

286 thresher sharks,

22 blue sharks,

40 galapagos sharks,

6 hammerhead sharks,

2 tiger sharks,

1 mako shark.

The capture, trade and transport of sharks is prohibited in the Galapagos Marine Reserve.

Now the Galapagos Park Management has initiated the respective legal and administrative processes to determine the corresponding sanctions against the FER MARY I.

Additionally, prosecutors have begun criminal proceedings.
