Rare Megamouth Shark found in South Africa in 2009

‘Dispatch Online’ is reporting that a shark discovered by East London scientist Kevin Cole two years ago was formally identified this week as being a rare megamouth shark ( Megachasma pelagios ).

The specimen represents the second record of a megamouth shark in South Africa. The first record washed ashore at Nature’s Valley near Plettenberg Bay in 2002. It was collected and housed at Bayworld in Port Elizabeth.

According to Mr. Cole, there had only been 53 previous recordings of the shark since its first discovery in 1976 in Hawaii .
