It’s time to say so long to the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s great white shark.

According to the aquarium’s facebook site, the sixth great white shark ever exhibited in Monterey is on his way back to the wild.

The young male shark was brought to the aquarium on August 31 (see here).

Earlier today, he was moved out of the million-gallon Open Sea exhibit and transported to ocean waters south of Point Conception . They are planning to release the shark offshore this afternoon.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is glad to report that the great white gained nearly nine pounds and grew two inches during his 55-day stay on exhibit.

According to Jon Hoech (director of husbandry for the aquarium), the decision to release the shark was based on recent changes in how he was navigating in the exhibit.
