IT took Whyalla’s Andrew Sammut and Daniel Misan two hours to land this 180 kilogram bronze whaler shark off Cape Donington in the early hours of Saturday morning.

They fell just shy of their aim to break a record in the Adelaide Game Fishing Competition, but the shark did measure in at an impressive 2.95 metres.

The Adelaide Game Fishing Club members caught the shark on a 24 kilogram line with a small piece of tuna, and weighed it at Smart Catch.

“DJ (Damien Smart) and Jason Stephenson, two people I’ve never met before, helped us get the shark weighed,” Mr Sammut said.

“If they hadn’t helped we would have been in trouble.”

The competition is tag and release, with sharks only killed if they are a potential state or national record.

“The only way to tell is to get them out of the water.” It was their first time shark fishing in Port Lincoln.

The competition finishes in two weeks and Mr Sammut and Mr Misan think they will come back to Port Lincoln before it wraps up.
