ANNA MARIA ISLAND – For the second time in eight days a man fishing in the Gulf of Mexico off Anna Maria Island has been bitten by a shark.

Javier Perez was transported to Blake Memorial Hospital in Bradenton just after 1 pm Sunday. He suffered a bite wound on the back of his left thigh.

According to a Manatee County Sheriff’s Office report Perez was fishing at Bean Point in waist deep water when the incident occurred. The victim was fishing with three adults and three children at the time.

Perez was done for the day and dumped his bait into waist deep water. He told authorities he felt a shark pass behind him when he felt a tug and saw blood in the water.

His friends and family quickly waved down a passing boater who transported the victim to Rod and Reel Pier. Perez, who also had some scratches on this leg, was taken from there to Blake.

Perez and his family are vacation in the area according to the report.

On September 24, a 21-year-old Longboat Key man who was fishing in the Gulf suffered a more severe shark bite. CJ Wickersham received over 800 stitches to close a wound to his left thigh.

Witnesses to that bite say the culprit was a nine-foot bull shark.
