Shark bites swimmer in Gulf Shores

GULF SHORES, Alabama — A man was bitten on the leg by a shark while swimming in the Gulf of Mexico between Baldwin County 2 and the Gulf State Park Pier around mid-morning Wednesday, according to Grant Brown, the city’s director of cultural affairs and recreation. The unidentified swimmer was treated and released at South Baldwin Regional Medical Center in Foley.

“He was in waist-deep water and he saw the shark,” Brown said this morning. The wound looked like a cheese grater had been rubbed along his leg, he said. The man received stitches and antibiotics.

The purple flags — which warn swimmers of dangerous marine life — were posted after the incident, Brown said. The beaches were not closed.

“This was a random thing at this point,” Brown said.

Local lifeguards and Gulf Shores Fire and Rescue responded to the incident.

Just wondering why the purple flags aren’t flying when there are shark sightings instead of after an attack?  The sharks have been seen everyday in the last 2 weeks but not until the shark attacked were the flags changed to purple.  The sharks have been in shallow water no more than waist deep.

    • That’s how they handle sharks in the good old USA. They take a cross your fingers and hope approach. The USA has more shark attacks than any other place for a reason. In Ft. Lauderdale they aren’t even called sharks, they are called “sea pests”.

Shark sighted 4:30 at gulf shores today. Cruising along coast line in waist deep water.  Talk about it is is being heard by beach walkers. It’s August 13,2013. A storm is rolling in.

  5. The fear of sharks is true, but the chances you will be attacked by a shark in Gulf Shores, Alabama are almost nil.
