City welcomes approval of permit for trial deployment of shark exclusion nets

The City of Cape Town is pleased to confirm that it has received a positive decision from the National Departments of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF), and Environmental Affairs (DEA), in terms of a permit to trial the deployment of a shark exclusion net at Fish Hoek Beach.

The City is grateful to both the DAFF and the DEA for the approval of this permit to allow the trial of an innovative shark safety measure. The permit will be valid until 31 January 2014.

The City is currently studying the permit conditions in greater detail with a view to ensuring that all conditions are met during the exclusion net trial period.

The City will inform the public and the relevant authorities as soon as the first efforts to trial the net commence.

What is the innovative net ? A new kind of a net in trial or is just for PR purposes to call it an innovative shark safety measure. If it is the net we know, it will kill all kinds of sea life, and mammals. If it is a new type of net, can we please have a description or a picture ?
