19th Annual Mako Mania

Location: Bahia Marina, Ocean City, Maryland, USA.
Date: 05. to 07. June 2015

This year, 37 boats were competing in the 19th annual Mako Mania Tournament which took place in Ocean City last weekend.

It is reported that at least thirteen sharks ( 10 makos and 3 threshers ) were brought to the scale at the Bahia Marina. Two of these specimens did not qualify because they did not meet the minimum weight requirement of 100 pounds.

Joe Stein reeled in a 281.6 pounds mako shark aboard the charter boat ‘Marli’ to finish in first place of the Mako Division. The catch was worth $ 27,590.00. But Jeff Green landed the largest specimen of the competition, a 500 lbs thresher shark, while fishing on ‘Hook N’ Tail’.

Shark fishing tournaments need to all be made catch and release or be banned entirely.

I agree. I am disgusted to hear of these mako sharks being killed for cash prizes. Guys, wake up! This is disgusting, unethical and unsustainable. May I remind you all the latest research now reveals that female mako sharks do not start breeding until 18 years of age, and only have a litter of shark pups every 3 years. And that, contrary to previous assumptions, makos are slow growing and long-lived (32+ years). Just disgusting to be killing these fish. Make this competition catch-and-release or close it down.
