6.1. Petition 0422/2013 by Martin Rother (German), concerning protection of the spiny dogfish

This petition has been submitted to EP Petition Committee via the Petition Committee of the German Bundestag.
The petitioner observes that ‘sea eel’ is made from the meat of the spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias).
For this reason the petitioner considers that the misleading name ‘sea eel’ (in Dutch ‘zeepaling’;
in Germany known as ‘Schillerlocke’) ought to be altered so that consumers realise that
the product consists of sharkmeat and is not a type of eel.
In addition to this the petitioner calls for a ban on trade in spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias).
The petitioner states that the spiny dogfish is an endangered species and that a ban on the sale of products
made from its meat could be a first step towards protection of this species of shark.

Decision:
– declare admissible;
– ask the Commission (DG MARE) for information;
– co-ordinate possible actions with the Committee on International Trade (INTA) whose
coordinators meeting to discuss this matter will take place on the 19/03/2014.
