New deadly shark attack in Reunion

A 15 year old girl died. The attack took place on Monday in a bathing area “near the marine cemetery” of the island

A 15 year old girl was killed by a shark Monday

A 15 year old girl was killed by a shark this Monday, July 15 in the Bay of Saint-Paul, on the island of Reunion, says the chain meeting first .

The young victim “swimming and snorkeling, just 5 meters from the edge,” says Surf Session .

The girl, who lives with his mother in France, was on vacation at the meeting with his father, head of a yacht club in St. Paul.
She bathed with another girl her age, who came out of water when the tragedy occurred.

This is the second fatal shark attack on the island since the beginning of the year, the fifth since 2011, most recently in May 8, when a metropolitan tourist, 36, on their honeymoon, was attacked and killed last May by a shark in Saint-Gilles while he was surfing.

This is the first time to the island of Reunion, a person is killed by a shark while swimming. All other casualties were surfers.

This is the fifth fatal attack in two years, under a total of 19 since 1980.

Tragic. What is going on over there? There have been a rash of fatal attacks in La Reunion , and this is the second one so far this year. Just like in Second Beach, it appears that the attacks are actually a form of predation; humans are now part of the food chain. This particular attack was rather gruesome from what I read in some French news publications. I hope that they find victim and lots of strength to the family.

What a tragedy. Condolences to the family and friends.
    God Bless Her.
I don’t think it is a pretadion of a human menu. The sharks are just over aggressive and in an attacking mode for some reason. We discussed some of the possible reasons before. In a bathing area where everyone thinks and feels safe by the protection of reefs, sharks are lurking for some reason.
I personally think some kind of chemical may be involved in the mood change of the sharks.
They are more dangerous than same type of species from other parts of the world. I think it is bull shark again. No matter what is wrong with the sharks, people should be protected by reasonable means and measures. This is already crazy as it is and it is getting worse…

euronews reported yesterday that the two girls were outside of a designated swimming area…Officials said the two girls were swimming in an unsupervised area where bathing is forbidden due to the high number of sharks. It is reported police and other rescue services launched a search for parts of the girl’s remains…my personal speculation would be that a 15 year old girl from France wouldn’t be up to date on shark behavior in this location.  This is a horrible tragedy and should be considered preventable in that we can come up with a solution that protects human life not at the expense of sharks in their natural habitat.

That is not good news Mark.
If, after all that happened, the local authorities are lacking to warn people and inform them about the nature of real threat, this is terrible news. It is peak season for French people from mainland Europe.Sometimes it is hard to convince young people about the true nature of a warning. They are just young and do not listen. But if the threat level is so high, no matter what they should have been stopped. (given the fact that it is very hard as well because of the topography of the island. You can just take a bike and basically can swim wherever you want if you take the risk of a hard and rush exit)
In any case, a young life is lost with a tragedy. If somehow it could have been avoided question will always be in the minds of people.
They need to find a solution. By now, we all know that killing the sharks only make things worse. More and bigger sharks replace them. I hope some part of the world will announce that they discovered an electronic repelling device that works for the large areas, all beaches to keep the sharks away.
This would be the day that we will stop seeing the shark attack news on the cover page of mainstream media.

I agree 100% however there can never be a full proof system in place to stop someone from doing something against the rules. I really believe this case is due to non information. The reports of the uk dailymail was that the victim was instantly killed and “sliced” in half, by their own words. This seems to have occurred only 15 feet from shore in the middle of the day. Not a human on this planet purposely puts themselves in that situation. There are serious problems in this area and these beaches need to be shutdown until alternate measures can be established. I applaud the human experience to interact and discover nature but this is nothing of that sort. My heart breaks for her family and friends. This is the ultimate tragedy. God help us if we don’t learn from this. I live in the middle of the US. If I traveled to reunion island for vacation and stumbled across this beach..it might have been me. I don’t read or speak French. Nothing on those posted signs suggest shark danger. Granted the victim is French but that’s a beautiful place and honestly who’s going to look at a sign with all that scenery. Once again, God please comfort all the broken hearts involved

An expert who was a guest on some French news show stated that this particular beach (St Paul) is dangerous because of a steep depth drop off close to shore, volcanic beach sand as opposed to white sand, perhaps making the water murky, and some other factors that allows for organic matter to seep into the bay. I grew up on an island where shark feeding was actually a past time. It was done on the windward side of the island where the water is extremely rough and unpredictable; bull sharks set up shop in that particular bay after they found out that the island’s slaughterhouse used it as a garbage dump.
