Studying life after release for sharks

Sharks get stressed too, which is why PhD student Corey Eddy has been studying the physiological response of sharks after being released from a tuna net as part of the ISSF’s #BycatchProject. By tagging sharks and studying their behavior after release, Eddy’s at-sea research can help determine which methods for handling sharks on board deliver the greatest chance for survival after release. In some cases, sharks will not thrive after incidental capture because of a rise in stress levels caused by incorrect handling by fishermen on board or too much time out of the water.
